5 Resume Mistakes That Cost You Job Interviews

Your resume has approximately 7 seconds to make an impression. In that time, a recruiter decides whether to read further or move on. Here are the five most common mistakes that kill your chances.

Mistake 1: Generic objective statements. "Seeking a challenging position in a dynamic organization" tells a recruiter nothing. Replace it with a specific value proposition: what you bring and what you're looking for.

Mistake 2: Listing responsibilities instead of achievements. "Managed a team of 5" is a responsibility. "Led a 5-person team that increased quarterly output by 40%" is an achievement. Always quantify your impact.

Mistake 3: Including everything you've ever done. A resume is not a biography. Tailor it to the specific role you're applying for. If experience doesn't relate to the position, it doesn't belong on the resume.

Mistake 4: Poor formatting and visual hierarchy. Dense text blocks, inconsistent formatting, and creative designs that confuse ATS systems. Keep it clean, scannable, and ATS-friendly. Mistake 5: No keywords from the job description. Modern hiring runs through applicant tracking systems. If your resume doesn't include the key terms from the job posting, it may never reach a human reviewer.
